Funds set up to honor Newtown victims

Several funds have been set up to honor the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The parents of the children who survived the Sandy Hook Elementary School have set up a fund. The money donated will be used to help with funeral costs as well as ongoing living expenses.

"We ask the world to join us not only in our grief but also in our burning need take some of the burdens off these families in their time of incredible pain," the website said. "To bear their cross in some small way."

Checks can be sent to My Sandy Hook Family Fund c/o Wells Fargo Bank, 26 Church Hill Rd., Newtown, CT 06470.

UConn has announced the Sandy Hook Memorial Scholarship Fund to provide financial student aid to survivors of the Newtown school shooting.

Siblings of the students who died and dependents of the adult victims will also have access to the scholarship.

Geno Auriemma and his wife, Kathy, have already made an $80,000 donation.

Checks can be sent to the UConn Foundation at 2390 Alumni Dr. Unit 3206, Storrs, CT 06269-3206. It must be indicated on the checks that it is for the Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The United Way of Western Connecticut, in partnership with Newtown Savings Bank, has started the Sandy Hook School Support Fund for the victims of the shooting.

"As people from our area and beyond respond to this heartbreaking tragedy, they are turning to United Way looking for ways to help," the agency said in a statement Sunday.

The fund will be used to "provide support services to the families and community that has been affected."

Checks can be sent to Sandy Hook Support Fund, C/O Newtown Savings Bank, 39 Main St., Newtown 06470, or they can be dropped off at any Newtown Savings Bank branch location.

Eastern Connecticut State University announced a scholarship fund in the name of the teacher, an alum, who hid and blocked her students in Newtown.

It is called the Victoria Leigh Soto Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund at Eastern to support students studying to be teachers who have unmet financial need.
