COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -
Chamberlain Branch was a lot of things to a lot of people.
"He came in for a job interview, but left a member of the family," said former Gov. Jim Hodges.
To governors Jim Hodges, Mark Sanford, and Nikki Haley, Branch was the go-to guy. He supervised the Governor's Mansion, seeing to whatever the first families or their guests requested.
"He left warm cookies by their bedside at night, and greeted them early the next morning," said former First Lady Jenny Sanford. "He treated everyone who came to the mansion with absolute kindness and selfless generosity."
"We are better people for having known him," said Gov. Nikki Haley. "My children saw unselfish kindness that will last them a lifetime."
Haley was one of many who had a hard time fighting back tears as Bethlehem Baptist said farewell to a giant.
"Chaney", as he was known, was very active in his church. He also loved football, art, and his family.
"We felt like nothing could come between us because our bond was so strong," said Branch's wife, Cherisse.
Cherisse said she and her husband could've done anything, and divorce was never an option. She liked to think they were and still remain a model of what a marriage should be.
"You will forever be in my heart," said Cherisse. "I'm so grateful that God chose you for me and me for you, and I was so proud to be your wife. I love you."
