The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School has turned some grief into anger and has once again ignited the debate on gun control.
Members of the Connecticut congressional delegation are calling for a ban on assault weapons such as the one used by the gunman.
Adam Lanza was armed and dangerous. He had two pistols and a military-style rifle when he entered Sandy Hook Elementary School and in just a matter of minutes, he fired multiple rounds killing 20 children and six adults.
The weapons used in the second deadliest school shooting in United States history included a Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapon with high capacity magazines, a Glock 10 mm and a Sig Sauer 9 mm. State police said that Lanza mainly used the Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapon in the school.
State police also confirmed that each victim was shot multiple times.
More than 3 million Americans own an AR-15 - it's the most popular rifle in America.
"It's a fun gun to shoot," said gun owner Rick Friedman.
However, since the shooting, some gun owners in Connecticut are stocking up on the weapon, and national sales on the Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapon are up.
But that feeling is not shared by Connecticut senators, congressional leaders and mayors, who want to see a federal ban on assault weapons reinstated.
"It's the right time to ask what can we do to stop this sort of tragedy," said U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-CT.
"Any weapon that can fire that many bullets that quickly is just not something that should be available to the public," said New Haven Mayor John DeStefano.
The AR-15 has a futuristic appearance. It is the gun of choice in movies and video games.
Last week, a man used one to kill two people at a shopping mall in Portland, OR. In July, a gunman used it in a movie theater in Aurora, CO, where he killed 12 people and injured 58.
Dick's Sporting Goods has pulled certain types of semi-automatic rifles from its shelves out of respect for the families in Newtown.
However, Hoffman Guns in Newington is a busy place these days. And gun owners do not believe a ban is the answer.
"I think there should be more into mental health, they should look at that rather than banning all these assault rifles," said gun owner Paul Soltesz.
The National Rifle Association of America released a statement following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
"Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting," the NRA said in the statement.
"The National Rifle Association of America is made up of 4 million moms and dads, sons and daughters - and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown," the NRA said in a statement Tuesday.
The NRA said its is planning on making a contribution to "make sure this never happens again."
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are searching all gun shops in Connecticut to see if they have any activity with Nancy and Adam Lanza.
The ATF is still looking for leads in the case when talking to local gun providers.
