Information on how to contact your legislator about gun control

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) -

Eyewitness News is providing viewers and readers a way to voice their opinions on national gun control policies by equipping them with information on how they can contact their senators and representatives.

Adam Lanza had two pistols and a military-style rifle when he entered Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday morning and in just a matter of minutes, he fired multiple rounds killing 20 children and six adults.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama addressed the nation and said his administration would look at ways of reducing gun violence in the country.

"This time, the words need to lead to action," Obama said.

The president set a deadline of January for recommendations to be made on gun control. According to The Associated Press, Obama has pushed for "stricter background checks for people who seek to purchase weapons and limited high capacity clips."

In Connecticut, residents can contribute to the discussion by emailing their United States senators and representatives.

Since the shooting, newly-elected U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy has been discussing ways to reduce gun violence in the country.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-CT, has called to "effectively ban assault weapons," especially ones "not designed for self-defense or hunting, but rather for killing as many people as possible, as fast as possible."

"It's the right time to ask what can we do to stop this sort of tragedy," he said on the Senate floor Tuesday.
