Gun Sales surging across nation

NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -

Talks of a renewed push for an assault rifle ban following last week's massacre has many people running to their local gun store.

Across the nation, gun dealers are seeing an increase in gun sales, due to fears of any new gun control legislation.

Thousands of Americans have been heading to their local gun store to secure the popular AR-15, which is the model allegedly used by the shooter Adam Lanza.

Lanza had two pistols and the AR-15 when he entered Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday morning and in just a matter of minutes, he fired multiple rounds killing 20 children and six adults. Before the school shooting, he shot his mother four times and eventually turned the gun on himself.

Future legislation could affect availability of certain semi-automatic weapons, the features each gun has and the number of rounds that each magazine hold.

Colorado set a single-day record for gun background check requests the day after the mass shootings. Crowds were also seen in Indiana and North Carolina with hundreds applying for permits.

"Saturday, Sunday and Monday, we had 290 applications," said Mecklenburg County North Carolina Sheriff Chipp Bailey.

Hoffman Guns in Newington has had people packing their parking lot for days.

Now, some online retailers are removing assault rifles from websites in part because of diminishing supplies.

Dick's Sporting Goods announced Tuesday it's suspending sales of military-style rifles nationwide to show respect to the families and victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

But, some gun dealers say the move is likely a stunt.

"If they believe so hard of pulling which is their right to do," said Jason Webb, who owns a gun store in Texas. "Then they should pull all the product lines that are technically the category of an assault rifle."
