Snowflakes for Sandy Hook requested by PTSA

HAMDEN, CT (WFSB) -

Members of Connecticut's Parent Teacher Student Association are requesting homemade snowflakes for students of Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The CT PTSA said it's looking to help the students of the school have a winter wonderland as they return to school following the second-deadliest school shooting in United States history.

Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother and then went to Sandy Hook Elementary School where he shot and killed 20 students and six more adults before turning the gun on himself.

Now, the CT PTSA is hoping people of Connecticut step up, get creative and make paper snowflakes that will be placed inside the new school in Monroe by the time survivors of the shooting return to school in January.

On Thursday, paper snowflakes flooded into the CT PTSA ready to turn the new school into a winter wonderland.

"It's such a hard thing to fathom, it's such a hard thing to deal with, and to be able to do one small concrete thing just makes such a difference," said Marne Usher of CT PTSA.

The idea of snowflakes came straight from a parent of a Sandy Hook Elementary School student.

"They wanted to do some kind of student art project to have other students contribute to their new school and it finally came down to a snowflake," Usher said.

On Thursday, a special needs group from the Oak Hill Day Program worked on the arts and crafts project.

"We just said that we were doing something nice for children that are going to a new school and needed decorations," said Amy Smith of Oak Hill Day Program.

And the donations aren't just from our state.

Massive snowflakes were decorating the student center at Cedarville University in Ohio. So, instead of throwing them out, school officials bagged them up and sent them to Connecticut.

"We just got an email this morning from the USO in Kuwait," Usher said. "They're going to have the soldiers making snowflakes on Christmas Day - that made me cry."
