A Wintry Start to Winter!

Posted: Updated:

TGIF!  The countdown to Christmas is REALLY on - we're only four days away now!  The countdown to winter is over - we officially kick off the new season today.  After some mild weather earlier this week, it's all about the COLD today - just in time!

Highs will only reach the upper 40s in the Upstate and the mid/upper 30s in WNC... but the strong, gusty winds will make it feel even COLDER, so be ready for wind chill values in the 20s and 30s.  As Andy's last post said, winds will be a huge issue today, so please make sure your Christmas decorations are secure around your yard and home.  HIGH WIND WARNINGS continue for WNC - where gusts of 50-70 mph are possible - and WIND ADVISORIES continue for everyone else, with gusts of 40-50 mph possible.  Those warnings and advisories are in effect until noon Saturday.

While the Upstate will stay sunny and dry today, the Mountains will see more cloud cover.  TN border areas of Graham, Swain, Haywood, Madison, Yancey and Mitchell Counties will continue to see upslope snow showers through most of the day (they'll taper off by the evening).  Most of these spots can count on 1-2" accumulation.  A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY continues until midnight for Mitchell, Yancey and Madison Counties, where up to 3" is possible (a few isolated spots could even pick up a bit more).

Winds will relax this weekend, with sunshine and dry weather on tap through the weekend.  Dry and breezy weather Saturday will lead to a high fire danger... but other than that, the conditions will be good news this weekend - nice and dry for travelers!

Rain chances return on Monday and Tuesday, so it could be soggy for some folks on Christmas.  By Wednesday, a storm system could bring heavy rain to the Upstate and a change from rain to snow in the Mountains.  We'll keep an eye on that setup as we get closer.
