Clemson students help with Sassafras Mtn overlook

SASSAFRAS MOUNTAIN, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's highest peak has a new overlook thanks to a team of Clemson University graduate students.

The state Department of Natural Resources helped the students install the overlook near a parking lot not far from the 3,353-foot peak of Sassafras Mountain. The wooden overlook includes sky blue rails and extends just beyond the rock outcropping.

DNR is currently trying to raise money to build an observation tower atop Sassafras Mountain. The agency's fundraising efforts were kicked off with a $25,000 contribution from the Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, which is a private, nonprofit corporation that partners with DNR to promote conservation and enjoyment of the outdoors.

DNR also is selling engraved bricks at its website that will be placed atop the mountain.
