The suspect in the sexual assault of a Los Angeles-area girl was arrested in Greenville early Thursday morning, according to deputies.

Master Deputy Laura Campbell, of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, said 30-year-old Charles James was arrested at a home on Emile Street after deputies received a tip.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said James was named as a suspect in the Dec. 13 rape of a 15-year-old girl who was walking to school.

L.A. investigators said James followed the girl before grabbing her, dragging her into some bushes, raping her and then fleeing the scene.

"Obviously we consider him to be a very dangerous person," said Lt. Brian Hudson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office. "A predator. Someone that would do this to a child."

But his loved ones paint an entirely different story. They say this must be a big mix up, they don't believe the loving father of three would harm a child.

"I know that child is traumatized, but mistakes do happen and this is one of the biggest mistakes," said James' mother-in-law Valerie Gay.

"It's just not in his character, he's a loving person," she said. "He'll do anything for you when you ask. I've never had any problem with him. He never disrespects me. He never disrespects his girl or the children. He's just a good father."

Gay says James was in the Greenville area with her, visiting family for the holidays.

Deputies say James did contact the Los Angeles authorities when he discovered they were searching for him.

James is being held in the Greenville County Detention Center on a fugitive from justice warrant. He was denied bond. Eventually he will be transported back to California to face six charges in connection to the rape.
