The coroner said a man died not long after he was hit by a train in Spartanburg on Sunday night.
The Spartanburg County coroner said the man, identified as 50-year-old Lester McCombs, was hit near Henry and South Forest streets about 6 p.m. and died in surgery at 8:45 p.m. at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Spartanburg police said a witness saw McCombs walk around the railroad crossing arms, climb up between two train cars with his bike and get on the train.
Police said when the train started moving, McCombs fell between the cars and was run over where he was found lying across the tracks and road. Officers found the man's bike still on the train.
