BOILING SPRINGS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies said a Cowpens man beat his father to death Wednesday night then ran away, leading law enforcement on a manhunt in Boiling Springs.

Spartanburg County deputies searched for the son near Peachtree Road and Mountain View Road in Boiling Springs and eventually found him walking along Highway 221 near the Lake Blalock bridge early Thursday morning.

Investigators said the man got into an argument with his father in a truck at the intersection about 7:50 p.m., and the father was injured. A woman driving by said she heard the man call for help and when she told the son that she called 911, he ran away, deputies said.

Deputies said they found the father slumped over the driver's seat of a pickup truck with trauma to his face and head. Coroner Rusty Clevenger said the victim, identified as 65-year-old Vaughn Bishop, of Chesnee, later died at the hospital. He said more tests will need to be conducted before Bishop's cause of death can be released. However, he did say that Bishop appeared to have only suffered minor cuts to his face and hands.

Deputies said the man's son, 25-year-old Jason Bishop, was arrested after he admitted he and his dad had a fight that escalated into him beating his father. He was charged with murder and had a hearing Thursday afternoon, where he was denied bond until he appears before a circuit court judge to have his bond set.
