The sexual battery charge against a former Boiling Springs High School teacher has been dropped, according to prosecutors.

Seventh Circuit Solicitor's Office spokesman Murray Glenn said the sexual battery of a student 16 or 17 years of age charge against Abby McElhenny has been dismissed but could not comment on the reason behind the dismissal.

McElhenny turned herself in and was charged on June 1, 2011 after deputies said she had a sexual relationship with a student. State Board of Education records show McElhenny's license was suspended on June 7, 2011 following her arrest.

At the time of her arrest, deputies said she exchanged hundreds of text messages with the male student during their alleged relationship. Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said McElhenny was also spotted by friends of the teen's family holding hands at a local restaurant and Spartanburg's annual Spring Fling festival.

McElhenny resigned from her job as Spanish teacher and boys and girls swim coach, according to Spartanburg County School District 2 in 2011.
