Yellow Pages Publishes report showing Australian small businesses not utilizing social media despite heavy use among population. New start up Connect Social Media aims to help small business owners by offering a complete strategy and management service.
Melbourne, Victoria (PRWEB) January 09, 2013
2012 has come and gone. For many small business owners, this is a time to establish goals and resolutions heading into the New Year. A report published by Yellow Pages in partnership with the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association may provide assistance to Australian small business owners looking to make New Year’s resolutions involving their business. The published report was based on survey responses of nearly 2,000 Australian businesses regarding their usage of social media marketing. The results were surprising. Of the 1,951 businesses surveyed, only 27% of small businesses and 34% of medium businesses had a social media presence.
This is despite the fact that over half of Australia’s population uses Facebook on a regular basis. The report clearly reveals that many small and medium-sized (SMBs) Australian businesses still don’t have a social media strategy or are unaware if it is helping their business. The sizeable gap between the number of Australian businesses using social media compared to the general population indicates a large usage gap between small business owners and the general population.
Matt Thomson, Co-founder of Australian-based Connect Social Media stated, “According to social media analytics firm Socialbakers, nearly 55% of the country’s population use Facebook. That’s 11.8 million people. Of those 11.8 million people, the average person spends a staggering six hours per week on Facebook alone. In other words, it’s clear that social media has enormous potential when it comes to marketing. The problem is, most small business owners are unsure and too busy to fully capitalize on social media’s potential.”
It is Thomson’s opinion that that gap in social media usage between the Australian general public and the country’s business owners stems from business owners being too busy or otherwise unsure of how to use social media to attract and engage with customers.
Thomson says, “Social media marketing is a burgeoning industry filled with nuances and best practices that seemingly change on a daily basis. The average small business owner is simply too busy running their business to focus on keeping up with their Facebook page. And for the ones that do spend time on social media, they are often overwhelmed with where to start.”
“I am a small business owner myself so I know first hand the struggles of balancing day-to-day activities with my marketing efforts,” says Thomson. “But it was because of this struggle that myself, along with a group of business partners, founded Connect Social Media.”
Connect Social Media is social media marketing firm that helps small to medium business owners utilize social media channels to attract new customers, retain existing clients, establish branding and build trust and influence within their target markets.
Thomson goes on to say, “There are plenty of social media “pros” out there that promise results. We’re unique in this space because we do ALL the work. We create, post, monitor and measure all of our client’s social media channels so they can focus on the core competencies of running their business. We don’t just create a social strategy and hand you the keys. We jump in the driver’s seat and implement, run and optimize the entire campaign. Business owners know their business and customers; we know social media. We marry these two skill sets in a way that leads to long-term marketing success.”
