DUNCAN, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Bobby Bentley is returning to the sidelines at Byrnes High School, officially accepting the position as head football coach.

Sources told FOX Carolina early Wednesday morning that Bentley had taken the coaching job, which school district officials confirmed. Spartanburg County District Five officials said Bentley would leave his role as the district's director of public relations and district athletic director, filling the head coach position.

The Byrnes position was left vacant when head coach Chris Miller announced he was leaving after five seasons to take over at rival Spartanburg High School.

Bentley was head coach at Byrnes for 12 seasons, leading the Rebels to four consecutive AAAA Division II state championships from 2002 to 2005. He left Byrnes to take over as head coach for Presbyterian College in 2007 before returning to Spartanburg County as the athletics director in 2009.

Some of Bentley's biggest honors came while previously coaching the Rebels, including being named Nike Coach of the Year and South Carolina Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year.

The school district is now actively searching for candidates for the district-wide athletics director and public relations positions.
