GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies said they were called to a home in Hodges after a dog bit a Greenwood woman and she later died.

Greenwood County deputies said they arrived at the East Grumling Road home Tuesday night to find a woman, identified by the Greenwood County Coroner's Office as 65-year-old Betty Ann Todd, lying lifeless with a neck wound that appeared to be from an animal bite. Deputies said there was a black and white dog that was also covered in blood at the scene.

Todd was watching children at the home when the attack happened, deputies said. Deputies said one of the girls at the home called her dad, saying Todd had been attacked and needed medical help, then took the rest of the children to a neighbor's home for safety.

When deputies entered the home, they said the dog became aggressive and ran into a back bedroom. Animal control officers arrived and took the dog to the animal shelter.

Deputies said the homeowner and his wife arrived, saying his mother had come over to watch their children and she had been around the dog numerous times and it had never been aggressive toward her. Deputies said the dog appeared to be a pit bull.

Todd died from neck and spinal injuries, according to the coroner's office.
