NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A historic church in Newberry County went up in flames Thursday morning as firefighters worked to battle the blaze.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire that destroyed parts of St. Paul Lutheran Church on SC Highway 773 near Interstate 26.

Deputies said smoke and flames were first reported about 6:30 a.m. and when firefighters arrived, they found most of the church engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from Newberry and Lexington counties were called to put out the fire.

According to the church's website, the church was organized in 1761 and the current granite sanctuary was dedicated in 1941.

Deputies said the cause of the fire is under investigation with the help of the State Law Enforcement and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents.
