GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

To those who may have felt the brunt of the flu season, there is now a Facebook app that claims to help figure out who spread those coughs and sneezes.

It can be searched for by typing into Facebook, "Help I have the flu." In a description of the app, it said, "nothing will make you feel better like finding somebody to blame."

It searches through Facebook friends and comes up with a list of who may have passed it along, or who should be avoided.

Sue Boker, an infection preventionist at Greenville Hospital System, keeps track of the number of flu diagnoses by their doctors each year. She said this year is already much worse than last.

She said if the app takes people's statuses if they use the words, "sick," or "flu," they would likely only post about being sick, once they showed symptoms. Boker pointed to a problem with that, because people who have the flu are contagious a day before they actually show signs of sickness.

"So if you're posting on Facebook that you have the flu and this Facebook app picks it up, you coulda been exposed to that person at any time before that and gotten the flu from them," said Boker.

She said the best way to handle the flu season is to act like anyone could have the flu by protecting yourself with precautionary cleanliness: get the flu vaccine, wash hands, cover coughs, stay home at work when sick and stay away from sick people.
