FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -

A 28-year-old California man told rescuers he jumped down a 100-foot vertical mine shaft in the bottom of Meteor Crater in northern Arizona to "appease the gods," but instead suffered several broken bones.

More than 30 rescuers braved sub-freezing temperatures to bring Parminder Singh, of Union City, CA, back to the surface and to Flagstaff Medical Center late Thursday, according to Erika Wiltenmuth of the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.

A Meteor Crater park employee notified the sheriff's office about 4 p.m. of a man trespassing at the bottom of the crater, which is closed to the public, Wiltenmuth said. The employee continued to watch the man while a deputy drove to the crater, and saw the man jump feet-first into the mine shaft.

Rescue crews were flown into the crater and cut their way through a barb-wire barricade surrounding the shaft's opening and heard a muffled cry from Singh about 8:20 p.m., Wiltenmuth said.

Supplies, including food, a portable radio and warm clothing, were lowered to Singh and he told the crews he believed he had dislocated and broken his right arm, one of his legs and suffered severe pain in both legs. He also told them he was going in and out of consciousness.

A member of the Flagstaff Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team was lowered the 100 feet to Singh and spent an hour to initially treat him and prepare him to be lifted out of the shaft.

Singh then had to be carried up a 600-foot incline more than a mile through high winds and sub-freezing temperatures to the parking lot of the visitor's center, where he was taken by ambulance to the hospital, Wiltenmuth said. She said strong winds prevented a helicopter from flying Singh for medical treatment.

Singh was listed in stable condition.

Wiltenmuth did not say whether Singh would be charged.
