Arpaio offers hot soup; Tent City inmates bundle up

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Inmates at Maricopa County's Tent City jail spent Friday night preparing for the Valley's coldest temperatures of the year.

Nearly 500 male inmates will sleep outside as temperatures plummet into the high 20s to low 30s.

Inmates are passing up the standard-issue pink boxer shorts, opting instead for thermal underwear which is also, you guessed it, tinted pink. Many inmates were seen wrapping towels around their necks like as a scarf.

"We will take some extra precautions," said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "They can have as many blankets as they want. I am going to open up my heart and give them some chicken soup."

Normally, inmates are not allowed to have more than several blankets, due to security reasons. But despite the relaxing policy, some inmates say it literally leaves them in pain to spend the night outside in the cold.

"One spot will be warm and you've gotta move around to stay warm," says inmate Alex Patton. "There's no really getting warm or getting comfortable. It hurts. It hurts out here."

"We're a little cold, but I mean, it's jail. What do you expect?" added inmate Arturo Munoz Jr.
