PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

A 24-year-old man who was base jumping off a mountain in Phoenix suffered injuries when he struck rocks on his way down.

The man's chute opened after he jumped off Camelback Mountain on Sunday morning, but he struck rocks about halfway down the mountain and then fell 60 to 80 feet, according to Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Capt. Scott McDonald.

The extent of his injuries was unavailable.

He was taken to local trauma hospital.

The accident happened at a spot on the mountain called Bobby's Rock, McDonald said.

Base jumping is the sport of jumping off fixed structures and using parachutes to break the fall.
