Deputies said a search of a female inmate's mail led to another woman landing behind bars.

Union County deputies said 19-year-old Chelsea Carroll mailed two letters to an inmate at the Union County Jail. They said one letter had a brown leaf-like substance and the other had a partially crushed pill.

Inside the envelopes, one note read that the crushed cigarette tobacco fulfilled Carroll's promise to send a Newport and the other said the pill was a valium, deputies said.

Carroll was arrested and charged with two counts of providing inmates with contraband.

After being booked into jail, deputies said Carroll assaulted a jailer by hitting him in the face, knocking his glasses to the floor and damaging them. She then charged with third-degree assault and battery.
