GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Deputies are investigating a homicide at a Greenville apartment complex after they found a man dead outside one of the buildings Saturday night.
Greenville County deputies said they first received a 911 call after someone heard gunshots at the Crescent Landing Apartments located at 1008 White Horse Rd. They said a few minutes later, someone called 911 again saying they heard gunshots near the N building, where they could see a man lying on the ground between the N and O buildings.
Saturday's shooting marks the third death in the neighborhood in 2013. Community activist and organizer of a non-violence group called "Put the Guns Down" Jack Logan says the crime has got several in the community scared for their safety.
"There's a number of people I spoke to last night that fear going out to stores to buy gas," said Logan. "They are scared they might be shot because in some of these cases there has not been an arrest. People just don't care about other people's lives."
Friends and family of the recent victims attended a prayer vigil Sunday night in Greenville. They say they need to work together to make the violence come to an end.
"We need to try and come up with a game plan and figure out what is stemming the violence," said Trina Burton. "Get to the root cause and try to correct it. We need to stop it before it grows any further."
Deputies arrived at 10:11 p.m. to find the victim in the parking lot. Friends say the victim is 47-year-old Edward Goldsmith. The investigation is currently ongoing, and deputies say they are hoping the public will come forward with tips. Investigators ask if anyone has any information regarding the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 864-23-CRIME.
