USC names new D-line coach, Lawing heads to UF

COLUMBIA, SC (AP/FOX Carolina) -

The Gamecocks' defensive line has a new coach after the former one announced he was headed to the Swamp on Tuesday.

University of South Carolina Football Head Coach Steve Spurrier said Deke Adams was joining the coaching staff following Brad Lawing's departure. University of Florida Head Coach Will Muschamp has hired Lawing as the Gator's defensive line and assistant head coach.

Adams comes from the University of North Carolina where he coached the defensive line in 2012 along with two previous seasons under Chapel Hill's Head Coach Larry Fedora at Southern Mississippi - where he also played in the early 1990s.

"I'm excited about getting to Columbia and the opportunity to coach with Coach Spurrier and Coach (Lorenzo) Ward," said Adams. "I've known about South Carolina for a long time and it's a great opportunity for me and my family."

Lawing's move to Spurrier's alma mater and former team comes after seven seasons coaching the Gamecocks' defensive line and 17 seasons in all with the team.

"Brad Lawing did an excellent job here for the last seven years," Spurrier said. "He's a good coach and we appreciate everything he did for the Gamecocks. We wish him all the best."

He replaces Dan Quinn, who was Florida's defensive coordinator and line coach. Quinn left last week, returning to the NFL as Seattle's defensive coordinator.

The Gamecocks (11-2) lost to Florida (11-2) in Gainesville 44-11 during the 2012 season.
