SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A gun and police badge were among items stolen when someone broke into vehicles belonging to a police officer and a deputy in Spartanburg County.
The thefts happened between Sunday night and Monday morning at homes on Corrie Fields and Shallowford neighborhoods.
According to incident reports, the thief stole a tactical vest, walkie-talkie, binoculars and a laser light from one of the vehicles. A gun, badge and holster were taken from the other vehicle, according to the incident report.
"Anytime you have a weapon stolen during a burglary or a break-in, the weapon is a threat to the community as a whole," said Lt. Tony Ivey with the Spartanburg Sheriff's Office. "Now we've got somebody that has a police badge and it seems over the last couple of years we've had increasing number of folks trying to impersonate police officers."
The serial number of missing gun was entered into a national crime database, according to the incident report.
Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to Crime Stoppers at 888-CRIME-SC (888-274-6372).
