Abbeville Co. coroner to remain as sheriff until election

ABBEVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A primary and special election has been scheduled to fill the vacated seat following the resignation of former Abbeville County Sheriff Charles Goodwin.

Kim London, director of elections and voter registration in Abbeville County, said candidates interested in running for Abbeville County Sheriff must file between Feb. 1 and Feb. 11.

The county will hold primary elections on March 26 with the special election set for May 14.

The election will fill Goodwin's sheriff seat following his resignation, indictment and sentencing that all happened last week. On Jan. 15, the Attorney General's Office charged Goodwin with misconduct in office at which point he resigned.

On Friday, Goodwin appeared in a Greenville County courtroom where he pleaded guilty to the misconduct charge, admitting he took cash kickbacks from county funds paid to a local auto body repair shop for several years. He also admitted he used an inmate from the South Carolina Department of Corrections to perform work on his personal vehicles and his family's property.

Goodwin was sentenced to five years probation, 100 community service hours and he must pay restitution of $4,445.

As of Wednesday morning, London said no candidates had expressed interest to run. She said they must file with their respective parties in order to run in the primaries.

Abbeville County Coroner Ronnie Ashley is serving as sheriff, which is required by law. Ashley will serve as interim sheriff until the election is held.

Governor Nikki Haley could have appointed someone else as interim sheriff, who would have served until the election, but a spokesperson for her office said on Thursday that she chose to allow Ashley to serve instead.
