A Metro police officer who survived a gunman's bullet nearly three months ago has been named one of the officers of the year.
Faye Denson is the Field Operations Division's officer of the year for the East Precinct.
"Words can't exactly say what I felt at that time. I was just trying to take cover. I was just trying to get out of the line of fire when he was shooting," Denson said after the November shooting in an East Nashville alley.
The seven-year veteran had just joined the chase for suspect Eric Perkins, when the man turned and fired at officers.
A single bullet hit Denson in the leg, and if the bullet would have hit her inches from where it did, she could have died.
"I'm not a hero at all. I was just doing my job. I'm glad to do it. I've got great people to work with," Denson said. "It's just wonderful."
Denson's supervisor said, even after she was shot, the officer still managed to get on her radio and give fellow officers a direction on which way the 17-year-old suspect was heading.
He was eventually caught and charged with attempted murder.
While it's a memory that still haunts her, Denson said she's ready to go back.
"When I look back on it as a moment, you do get a little scared. You think a little bit about what happened, but it's a part of my job, and I enjoy being a police officer. I'm just glad that I wasn't hurt or anything," she said.
Though a date hasn't been set, Denson is expected to be back on the job in the near future.
