NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Midlands man was arrested after deputies said he posed as a bodyguard for Gov. Nikki Haley.

Newberry County deputies were alerted that 39-year-old William Fowler, of Chapin, was falsely presenting himself as a SLED agent assigned to the Governor's Security Task Force. They said Fowler had falsely identified himself as a licensed private investigator, presenting business cards to people in the community soliciting business as WSF Investigations.

Deputies said when they interviewed Fowler about the allegations, he admitted to them.

Fowler was charged by the Newberry County Sheriff's Office with impersonating a police officer. He was also charged with soliciting business as a private investigator by the State Law Enforcement Division.

Deputies said SLED also charged Fowler with forgery and filing a false affidavit with the Department of Motor Vehicles after he forged documents to obtain a Fraternal Order of Police license plate.

Fowler was convicted of forgery in 1992, of impersonating an officer in 1995, of credit card theft in 1995, defrauding a federally insured institution in 1998, and number fraudulent check convictions, according to deputies.

They said they are continuing to investigate and Fowler could face additional charges. Fowler was arrested late Friday afternoon and his bond was set at $10,000.

Investigators are asking anyone who had contact with Fowler when he identified himself as a police officer or offered private investigator services to contact the Newberry County Sheriff's Office at 803-321-2222.
