SC officials warn of phishing email after hacking at DOR
This email, which is being sent to inform taxpayers of a data breach, is real, according to officials. (SC Department of Consumer Affairs)
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Officials in South Carolina said taxpayers should be on the lookout for a phishing email that appears to be related to the recent hacking at the state Department of Revenue.
Last year, officials said the information of nearly every taxpayer in the Palmetto State was compromised after someone hacked into a system used to store the information at the state tax agency.
After the hacking happened, taxpayers were offered free credit-monitoring service for a year from Experian. Now, officials said people looking to cash in on the hacking attack are sending emails that appear to be from the credit bureau.
According to the state Department of Consumer Affairs, the email asks consumers to check on potential identity theft or a declining credit score by clicking on a link. Officials said clicking on the link and providing the information requested provides that information to the people behind the scheme.
Officials said consumers should verify the message by contacting the business using a known phone number. They said consumers should not click on any links in the message or cut and paste the links into their browser. They said consumers should also watch for broken English and bad grammar in the message. They said consumers should also use anti-virus software and firewall to protect their computers.
CORRECTION: The email pictured at right was originally reported on foxcarolina.com to be a copy of the phishing email to which this story refers. Unfortunately, that statement was false. The email pictured at right is a legitimate email being sent to taxpayers to inform them of the data breach, according to officials at the Consumer Affairs Department. We apologize for the error and any confusion this caused.
