BETHEL, CT (WFSB) -

School officials in Bethel said the middle school was placed in a modified lockdown after empty shell casings were found in the building Friday morning.

Bethel Middle School officials said several empty shell casings for a .22-caliber weapon were discovered on the floor outside the doorway to the cafeteria.

Because of an abundance of caution, the modified lockdown was ordered so police can search the school with a K-9 unit and try to identify the student that brought them to school. Students inside the cafeteria were also questioned.

"In the wake of the Newtown massacre, our world has changed. We are working diligently to ensure that students are safe and also feel safe," said Superintendent of Schools Kevin Smith in a statement Friday. "Providing a safe school climate is paramount."

Smith added that "no credible threat" was made to the school or its students.

School officials said students are safe and the situation has been resolved. Students returned to a normal class schedule.

Smith advised parents to check their children's backpacks before sending off to school.

Smith said school officials understand that the situation caused a high level of anxiety for many of the parents and family members. He will continue to public as information becomes available.
