SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Deputies said they charged the mother of a 3-year-old girl with child neglect after she was found wandering in a parking lot barely clothed while the mom and her boyfriend slept.
Spartanburg County deputies said about 7:40 a.m., someone spotted the girl in the parking lot of the Valvoline Oil Change on Reidville Road. They said the girl was wearing only a wet T-shirt and tennis shoes.
Paramedics responded to take the girl to the hospital because she had a temperature of 95.9, deputies said.
Deputies were able to determine the girl had wandered off from a nearby room at the Southern Suites. They said the girl's mother Jennifer Wanek, 22, and her boyfriend Joshua Taylor, 23, were asleep and had no idea the girl had left.
There was no food inside the room, deputies said. The couple was arrested and taken to the county jail while the girl was placed in emergency protective custody.
Deputies charged Wanek with unlawful neglect of a child and Taylor with accessory before the fact to a felony. Wanek remains in jail while Taylor was released on bond.
