SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Spartanburg police said a grocery store worker who tried to stop would-be shoplifters from driving off with beer was dragged by the suspects' SUV for several yards as they tried to flee.
Police said a worker at the Southport Road Bi-Lo store was pushing shopping carts back inside when he saw a man throwing cases of beer into the back of a SUV, working faster to get them in the trunk as the employee approached.
When the victim asked to see a receipt for the beer, a woman told him to walk over to the driver's seat where she showed him receipts from other stores, police said. A witness told police he heard the man tell the woman to go while he ran away.
Officers said the woman then shut the door on the victim and accelerated, trapping him partly inside the SUV and dragging him for about 20 yards before he broke free.
The victim then ran after the man, eventually stopping him and holding him in the bushes until police approached, according to the officer's report. As police pulled up, they said the man then tried to jump on the back of a passing car to getaway, but was thrown off and stopped by officers.
Police said they located the SUV and female driver a short time later at her home along with the $124.80 of beer.
Officers charged 35-year-old Tina Gary and 19-year-old Shaquille Marlowe with shoplifting. Marlowe was also charged with public disorderly conduct and Gary was charged with aggravated assault and battery.
