TAYLORS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A man threatening to kill himself prompted a hourlong standoff in the parking lot of a popular Taylors store Monday night.

Lt. Jim Holcombe of the Greer Police Department said the man was inside a car in the parking lot of the Target store at 6025 Wade Hampton Blvd. with a gun.

Officers say the man had called 911 in distress, threatening to kill himself.

About an hour later, police removed the man from the car, according to a FOX Carolina photographer at the scene. It was not immediately clear if the man will be charged with a crime.

Officers said this was a sensitive situation because it was so close to a busy shopping center.

"We always have safety concerns. This is a busy shopping area," said Lt. Matt Hamby. "We had lots of officers out here to set up a safe perimeter. We felt early on people were safe after we had secured the area."

Holcombe said part of the parking lot was blocked off while police talked to the man.
