A Shawnee Mission School District student successfully fought off an apparent attempted abduction.
The Shawanoe Elementary School student was walking home last Friday afternoon when a man inside a luxury SUV parked along the street tried to force him into the vehicle.
The boy managed to escape and ran to his home, where he called his mother, who in turn contacted police.
The child described the vehicle as a Cadillac Escalade or GMC Denali. The suspect is described as a black man between 28 and 35 years old. He weighs about 150 to 175 pounds. He had shoulder-length dreadlocks. In addition, he had a scar on his left arm and a tattoo on his upper right arm.
The district alerted parents on Monday. Parents are reminded to ensure their children are extra vigilant and walk in pairs going to and from school.
District officials said police worked with them in investigating the incident.
