EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate man likes to transport himself back in time for a spirited battle, and he may even transport himself to a national championship this spring.

Easley lawyer Trey Sutter may be an attorney by day, but during his free time, he trains as a medieval warrior. Always fascinated with the Middle Ages, Sutter said as a kid, he said he would pick up a stick and pretend he was sword fighting.

As an adult, Sutter progressed to activities like fencing and now is training for the United States Team competing in the world championships of medieval fighting, the Battle of the Nations.

Sutter said the competition represents battles from between 1000 A.D. and 1600 A.D., with armor requirements that are specific to geography and the time period.

Not only a fighter, Sutter makes most of his armor and other equipment in a shed near his Easley home. While it helps to be strong and study the latest fighting techniques, he said in most cases the winner is the person who is in the best shape and endures the longest.

"The average weight of the equipment I started with was nearly 100 pounds in steel added to my body," Sutter said. "That's almost half of my total body weight carried on shoulders and arms. And just raising your arm with an extra ten or fifteen pounds of armor gets extremely exhausting, quickly."

Sutter will try out for the Battle of Nations Team USA this week in Springfield, IL. If he makes the American team, he will travel to France to compete in the International Medieval Championships.
