NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Newberry man is in jail after deputies said he violently fought with one of their own officers, punching him while armed with a pistol after he was pulled over Tuesday night.

A Newberry County deputy said he pulled 24-year-old Trevor Sligh over along Cottage Avenue because he was driving without his lights on. The deputy said he called for backup after smelling marijuana come from inside the car.

Deputies said when the deputy tried to get Sligh to get out of the car, he went for his pocket and became combative. They said Sligh kept trying to reach inside the pocked, so the deputy tried to physically stop him.

The two continued to struggle, with the deputy pepper spraying and shooting at Taser at Sligh, to no avail, according to the sheriff's office. At one point, the deputy said he could feel a pistol inside Sligh's pocket. Deputies said Sligh eventually punched the deputy in the nose, breaking free and running away.

Deputies searched the area but said they did not find Sligh until about 9:30 a.m., nearly 10 hours after the fight first began. They said they found small amounts of marijuana and crack cocaine in his car.

"This was truly a fight for life or death," said Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster. "We are both fortunate and blessed that the deputy survived this incident because I am convinced that had the suspect been able to retrieve the weapon from his pocket, he would have shot the deputy."

Sligh was charged with assault and battery on a police officer while resisting arrest, possession of crack cocaine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Foster said Sligh was previously on probation for an assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature case in 2008.
