MARSHALL, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Two Madison County inmates who deputies said escaped after climbing the county jail's fence Wednesday night were arrested Thursday afternoon.

Madison County Sheriff Buddy Harwood said that about 7:50 p.m. 24-year-old Jonathan Motte and 20-year-old Joseph Norton scaled the security fence at the Madison County Detention Facility and ran away. He said several law enforcement agencies were called in to search for the men.

Harwood said about 20 hours later, the pair were found at Bearwood Apartments on Bailey Street. He said that as deputies approached the men they fled. He said both Norton and Motte were arrested after a footchase.

Both men were charged with escape from a county confinement facility, Harwood said. He said deputies are investigating the possibility that the pair broke into a building and a vehicle.

Motte had been in jail on a $75,000 bond since March 2010 on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, four counts of breaking and entering, four counts of larceny after breaking and entering and injury to personal property, deputies said.

Norton had been in jail since Jan. 17 on a $35,000 bond for charges of two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, breaking and entering, two counts of larceny after breaking and entering, two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and two counts of larceny of a firearm, deputies said.
