COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -

U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn says he's not interested in the top slot at the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Clyburn spokesman Patrick Devlin said Thursday that South Carolina's lone congressional Democrat was honored to be mentioned for the position but wanted instead to stay focused on returning Democrats to control of the U.S. House.

Clyburn easily won re-election to an 11th term in November. Earlier this week, Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Marcia Fudge wrote to President Barack Obama, urging him to consider Clyburn for the position.

Last month, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced his departure. The former Illinois congressman said he would stay at the department until his successor is confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
