Ex-Spartanburg teacher accused of lewd act with student
Courtney Kay (Spartanburg Co. Sheriff's Office)
SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A former Spartanburg science teacher was arrested Friday after deputies said she had an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old student.
Spartanburg County deputies said the boy's parents said on Jan. 30 that their son had inappropriate communication with his teacher, 29-year-old Courtney Kay, of Spartanburg, via Facebook. They said that during their investigation, they found that there was also inappropriate touching between the boy and Kay on school grounds.
Deputies said that Kay, a science teacher at Spartanburg High School Freshman Academy, resigned her position on Jan. 30.
Kay was charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. She was released from jail on a $15,000 personal recognizance bond Saturday morning. Kay has been ordered to have no contact with the victim or other students at the school electronically or in person.
According to the report, the parents of the victim feel he has been adversely affected by the incident, and are seeking counseling.
