PELZER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Pelzer woman said she has spent the last year helping a man, but Friday morning he broke into her home.

Deborah Owen said she stayed home Friday morning, recovering from flu-like symptoms.

"I heard a loud noise, and it was unusual," she said.

The noise was so loud she got suspicious just after 9 a.m. Friday.

"I looked out the window, and I saw a male going from back of house up to the tree line," she said.

Anderson County investigators have identified the man as 33-year-old Michael Perry, of Pelzer.

"I knew him, and I met him last summer," Owen said. "He told me then he was homeless, and I tried to help him."

Owen said she had given Perry money, side work and clothes to help him get back on his feet. But she couldn't believe he would try to steal some of her tools.

Owen said if he had asked, she would have been glad to help him any way she could.

"I tried to help him, but this was the way he repaid me, so he's going to have taken his own path now," Owen said.

Anderson County investigators said they found Perry in the area a short time after the incident and arrested him. He was charged with burglary.
