Ludwig pleads guilty to domestic violence charge

Posted: Updated:

A Greenville businessman who has been in prison for the past year appeared in court in Greenville County on Monday morning where he pleaded guilty.

John Ludwig Jr., 40, pleaded guilty to first offense criminal domestic violence in connection with his November 2011 arrest when police said he hit his wife.

At the time of his arrest, Ludwig was on probation as part of a guilty plea to reckless homicide after his Maserati hurtled through a field, launched off an embankment and plowed into Frederic Bardsley's home, killing the 62-year-old homeowner as he sat watching television in 2009. A judge said his arrest violated that probation, sentencing him to three years of an earlier five-year suspended sentence.

In January 2012, Ludwig was sentenced to three years in prison after a judge said he violated probation when he was arrested in November 2011. Following that arrest, Ludwig's wife claimed he only touched the back of her head to make a point and she did not want to press charges.

In court Monday, Ludwig was fined $2,500 and sentenced to 30 days in prison, which the judge suspended upon the completion of more intense family therapy. Ludwig's lawyer Kim Varner said Ludwig is bankrupt and seeking therapy, which his wife or friends will have to drive him to because he does not have a license.

"As of right now, his first job is to get reestablished with his family, save what assets that he can, and try to find employment," Varner said.

By pleading guilty, Ludwig waived his right to a jury or bench trial in the domestic violence case. While Ludwig's 30-day sentence in the domestic violence case was suspended, he will remain behind bars at least until March on the probation violation, when he is first eligible for parole.
