The New Haven Police Department announced Monday that checkpoints will be set up to ensure people follow the city's travel ban.

Police Chief Dean Esserman said the checkpoints will be set up at four of the city's entry points to discourage all nonessential travel to prevent any sort of impediments to the city's massive snow removal response.

"It's hard to get angry at Mother Nature but it's been a tough weekend," Esserman said. "First came the snow, now comes the rain. We've been working nonstop. Nobody's been home for the last couple of days."

Police set up checkpoints by 11:30 a.m. at the following locations:

  • Fountain Street at the Woodbridge town line
  • Dixwell Avenue at the Hamden town line
  • Whitney Avenue at the Hamden town line
  • Quinnipiac Avenue at the North Haven town line

"New Haven's finest have been working long hours. New Haven's bravest have been working long hours," Esserman said. "The Department of Public Works have been working long hours."

Crews have had to juggle cleaning out the streets and towing some cars in the process. They've also had to make several rescues.

"We've been driving doctors and nurses to the emergency room to staff work," Esserman said. "We've been taking patients who need kidney dialysis to the emergency centers."

Officers don't have the right to enforce a ban, but they're asking drivers to consider turning around.

"We've got to be out here doing our job," Esserman said. "Staying home will let us do our jobs better."

The city wants to have all neighborhoods in New Haven passable by Tuesday afternoon.

According to the mayor's office, Blizzard Charlotte dumped 34 inches on New Haven within 24 hours. Eyewitness News was told that's more snow than the Blizzard of '78.
