GREENWOOD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenwood police said a registered sex offender was arrested at a local elementary school after he showed up to give his ex-girlfriend a birthday gift.

Police said a teacher at Matthews Elementary School notified law enforcement that her ex-boyfriend David Dawson, 35, had been bothering her and she did not want any contact with him.

Then on Friday, she called police about 10:40 a.m. after she said she spotted him outside of the school in the parking lot and said she was scared. When police arrived, they said they found Dawson sitting in his car with a wrapped gift sitting on the passenger seat.

Police said Dawson was aware that deputies had told him not contact the woman, but he thought they were back together so he thought it was OK. Police said when they ran his name through their database, it came up that he was a registered sex offender in Aiken County.

According to the State Law Enforcement Division, Dawson has a conviction from 2005 in Virginia for criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

Police said they told Dawson he was not allowed to be with 500 to 1,000 feet of a school and arrested him on a charge of disturbing a school. The principal also had him trespassed from the school, police said.
