SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Police said two men trying to steal a buggy full of beer from a Spartanburg Walmart led officers on a short chase Tuesday morning after one of them nearly ran over an officer with his car.

A Spartanburg police officer was shopping at the Dorman Centre Walmart about 10:50 a.m. when he heard a call for loss prevention then spotted two men trying to run out of the store with the shopping cart with beer, authorities said.

The officer stopped the men, but one got away and into a Toyota Camry, police said. They said the man, identified as 32-year-old Theodore Brooks, nearly hit the officer as he fled the scene, but the officer was able to call out his tag number leading to a search of the area.

Another officer spotted the car as it fled and chased him before he crashed on Camelot Drive, according to police. They said Brooks ran on foot but was tracked and stopped by canine officers as they searched the area.

The second man, 19-year-old Odell Ferguson IV, was detained at the store. Both were charged with shoplifting. Police said additional charges were pending on Brooks.
