Spartanburg police said a drunk driver hit a 12-year-old boy riding his bike on a sidewalk Tuesday night.
Police said at 6:18 p.m. they were called to North Forest Street at West St. John Street where the boy had been hit.
Police said Kenneth Wright was driving south on North Forest Street when he sideswiped the boy, jumped the curb, then kept going, turning right onto St. John. As police approached the scene, officers said they saw the Wright's vehicle leaving the scene and the boy's bicycle was still stuck behind the car's right tire and sparks were flying from underneath the car.
The boy was taken to the hospital with a broken leg, police said.
When police spoke with Wright, they said he told them had two, 12-ounce Bud Lights at a friend's house and knew he hit a curb, but just thought he had a flat tire.
He was charged with felony driving under the influence, driving under suspension and leaving the scene of an accident. Police said he was also served with a bench warrant for driving under the influence first offense.
