Greenville man accused of sex with 15-year-old girl

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A Greenville man was arrested Feb. 2 after police said he used aliases on a website to entice a teen girl to have sex with him.
Greenville police said a joint investigation with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office determined that 35-year-old Rodney Swan used the aliases of "Ashley Patton" and "Brad Elser" on a website called MeetMe.com to chat with the 15-year-old girl.
"Parents should look through their teen's messages, their emails just to see what they're up to," said PFC Johnathan Bragg of Greenville PD. "Because in this day and age, you don't know who anyone is or if they're who they say they are."
A upstate family counselor says the best way for parents to enforce rules with their teens using electronic communication is to start early and be clear you will be looking at their messages.
"The conflict comes when it's a surprise, but when teens know what they will write will be read by their parents, it helps them be more accountable," said Suzanne Siman of the Carolina Center for Counseling and Behavioral Interventions.
Swan was charged with enticing a child to leave school, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. He was being held in the county jail.
Investigators said they have reason to believe Swan may have chatted with other people under the same aliases. They said anyone who chatted with Swan should call Crime Stoppers at 23-CRIME (864-232-7463).
