FAIR PLAY, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Firefighters said five homes in Fair Play were damaged or destroyed by a large fire Sunday.
Firefighters found two structures covered in flames Sunday afternoon after someone from across Lake Hartwell called 911. Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King said firefighters first spotted smoke from Durham Road in Fair Play about 4 p.m. then realized it came from across the lake where they found fire had consumed one home on Lee Road.
As the wind-driven fire spread, more structures caught fire, said King. A total of five homes and buildings were at least damaged by the blaze.
SLIDESHOW: Firefighters battle blazes
While the blaze was brought under control in about 45 minutes, nearly 60 firefighters spent five hours at the scene. South Carolina Forestry officers were called to assist with a bulldozer to contain approximately three acres of woods that also caught on fire.
Firefighters said no one was at home at the time of the fire.
Fifty firefighters from six departments from Anderson and Oconee counties were on scene and said their biggest challenge was bringing in water from the outside because there were no nearby fire hydrants.
