Bulger's Beat: Nashville musician revives Pickin' Parlor

Posted: Updated:

What was once a Nashville nighttime musical hot spot in the 1970s on Second Avenue downtown is back and in a new location.

The Old Time Pickin' Parlor is exactly what it says: a comfortable living room-like setting for old time American roots, country, blues and bluegrass music.

In a way, owner Richie Owens was born a generation too late. The resonator guitar and Dobro sound he makes rings back to his father and grandfather, and the music made on their Smoky Mountains porch.

"Everybody in my family played different instruments, and I wanted to play something no one else in the family was playing," Owens said.

Now, he's surrounded by music and the instruments that make it - many he crafted in a career that started with rock 'n' roll dreams and led to Dolly Parton and a five-year run on the road.

You name it, he can play it, and that's where you and his new shop come in.

"I just want you to be someone who enjoys music, period. Doesn't matter what level as far as a player, this is for everybody," Owens said.

Now inside Marathon Village, he's revived the Old Time Pickin' Parlor, a music store and friendly gathering spot to play or just listen to music.

It's a small slice of home, where the best and the beginners are all welcome.

"Oh, absolutely, and I'll pick with you," Owens said.
