MARIETTA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The River Falls Fire Station is still in shambles. The roof is still caved in, and on the inside it's getting worse.

"Quite frankly it's taken longer than it should to get to this point," said River Falls Fire Chief David Embry.

The wet weather brought a stale but knowing scene inside what was once a salvageable part of the fire station - specifically, the community center.

"[It's] the back part of the building which was not involved in the collapse," he said, referencing the community center. "The water seeps through the carpet, so the whole back is also destroyed."

It was back in July when the building was condemned. The roof was on the verge of collapsing. It wasn't long before the actual collapse happened.

But since then, not much has changed.

Embry said the past seven months have been filled with false starts and new problems.

"Everything piled up together, we're not going to be able to save any of it. We're going to have to start over," he said.

Greenville County is taking bids on a new fire station. In the meantime, firefighters have had to improvise - taking trucks home.

Embry hopes that the past seven months will fade quickly from memory so that work can finally get back to normal.

"Many of the calls (we get), we know," said Embry. "They're our neighbors, they're our friends. A lot of people we don't know. But still, there's a sense of doing something that needs doing."
