House committee wants Haley to cover contracts

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -

The House budget-writing committee wants Gov. Nikki Haley's office to pay $500,000 for contracts she signed in response to a massive security breach at the state's tax collection agency.

The budget clause approved Tuesday would require the governor's office to repay loans from the insurance reserve fund that covered contracts for consulting, legal and public relations firms.\

It would require Haley's office to provide $300,000 for attorneys and $200,000 for the media message.

Rep. Jim Merrill says the governor's office needs to cover those expenses. He says he doesn't intend for the clause to include the computer security firm contract.

The Budget and Control Board approved a $20 million inter-agency loan in December to cover contracts Haley approved after learning of the hacking in October. Haley is board chairwoman.
