COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

University of South Carolina police investigators and agents from the State Law Enforcement Division are investigating an alleged sexual assault case that happened very early Tuesday morning.

USC police say between midnight and 1 a.m., the female victim was walking in the 1400 block of Blossom Street near the East Quad when she was approached by a black male around 5'7" to 5'10" and wearing all black with a hat.

The victim told police the man took her wallet and phone and sexually assaulted her. She also told investigators she did not see a weapon, but believed him to be armed.

The suspect fled the scene a short time later.

According to the University, investigators were not notified about this case until late Tuesday afternoon. A university spokesperson says an area hospital notified investigators about the case late Tuesday afternoon.

If you have any information about this case, you are asked to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
